Mayavadis dont accept the authority of Srimad Bhagavatam, Ramayana and other Puranas. According to them these are not bonafide scriptures. For them bonafide scriptures are only those on which Adi Sankaracharya has written commentary. Other scriptures are not bonafide. If these people are adamant on not accepting upansidas and puranas there is nothing much you can do about it.
Hare Krsna.

What sampradaya doesnt accept the Upanishads? Ive never heard of such a thing, Sankaracarya did many Upanisad commentaries.Do you mean to say your friend doesnt accept the Puranas?
I think your friend is very confused.

he is not from any sampradaya. he is a disciple of fake guru.user [154] · 2009-12-02
They were always accepted as shruti. THis is the reason for latter Upanisads to be highly sectarian: this was one of the strategies used by sectarian movements to legitimate their own texts through granting them the nominal status of sruti. This is the case with Sakta Upanisadas, such as Sita, devi, Tripura upanisadas. But principal upanisadas form part of the body of the text of the vedas and always cited "Sruti iti" by the commentators.user [265] · 2009-12-03

No, the message of the 4 Vedas is mostly all about fruitive activities while the Upanishads are mostly all about liberation. If your friend has no desire for liberation, why should he bother reading the Upanishads?
