How does one get to know someone?

Greetings.

In another thread, the topic came up that it is necessary to know devotees closely enough, so as to be better able to assess whom to closely associate with and how, and whom not.

How does one get to know someone - which are the most meaningful topics that one should (directly or indirectly) inquire about from a devotee so that one may get to know them?

What should one especially pay attention to? What should one not pay attention to?

Thank you for your replies.

Haribhaktivilasa prescribes that guru and disciple should observe each other for one year. That traditionally meant living together. Their characteristics are also listed. They apply to any spiritual aspirant in general. Essential topics are already covered in sastras so we need help with their study.

Guru is manifested according to our sincerity and ones ajnata-sukriti...hence there needs to be submission after asking relevant questions, which encourage ones faith in guru to become more solid. However just by serving him in the association of serious devotees, our spiritual life becomes activated by the genuine mercy of the other sadhakas in their attempts to please guru!.Birds of a feather flock togetherNaturally we become more serious once we appreciate the older devotees, and their individual moods and flavours .We take on their similair traits to fit in,and also try to please their guru with a sweet service attitude,as we also want to tread a similair path .Myself i was accepted after nine months....,some of my godbrothers were accepted after 3-6 months only!
