Why do (some) Gaudiya Matha devotees only chant 1/2 the Maha Mantra in kirtans?

Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2010-02-01 · 7 answers
I have heard several different Gaudiya Matha kirtans and they all chanted 1/2 the Maha Mantra (Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare) then had the audience respond, then continue with the rest of the mantra (Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare). Why is this?

I have heard it done this way in Iskcon kirtans also, inlcuding from Aindra. Ive also heard it done chanting two names at a time then with response, i.e. Hare Krsna then response, Hare Krsna then response, Hare Rama then response, Hare Rama then response, etc, etc.

I always assumed it was just for some variety or way to keep the audiences invol;vement or attention.

People its an exchange a conversation, you are so used to the western approach of someone dominating the conversation, in the spiritual sky it is all about exchanges between different devotees and the ever present supreme lordhships Srimati Radharani and Sri Krishna.

Like deena says its about involvement and spontaneity not just following some pre-written sketch.

A lot of people find it easier to follow when you have a shorter mantra to repeat in kirtan. In the original shastra the Maha-mantra actually starts with Hare Rama segment.

There are no hard and fast rules. Kirtaniya sada hari

This is "Brighupati Das". I have forgotten which email account I used and I thus cannot get my password reset for that account.

I posted the original question with a challenging attitude and because of that it left a bad taste in my mouth and heart. I have though a lot about this issue since then and I thank you all for your responses! My conclusion is that Portnoy is absolutely 100% correct: "There are no hard and fast rules. Kirtaniya sada hari" However, wherever, in whatever way, just call out to Radha and Krsna.

das das anudas Brighupati Das
