A film made in Bengal in 1959, though historically not fully accurate, is an effective and dramatic presentation of Sriman Mahaprabhus activities.[/p]

The entire movie:[/p]

I love the bhajans in this film.

I also deeply enjoy the Tukaram film from the late 30s, really amazing in every way from plot to musical score and acting.

Hi mung, oh please post a link, or a link on info or anything you have on it, the Bengali culture of this period is rapidly disappearing as modernisation sweeps through the planet. Sriman Mahaprabhu appeared in the Bengali culture not by accident, they have such a sweet culture.

Please post anything you have on Tukaram....please please!

Its actually a Marathi movie, won best foreign film at the Cannes film festival. Its one of the movies included in the Devotional film dvd pack: http://www.krishnaculture.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=KC&Product_Code=KCDVD&Category_Code=DC[p]

I will post them as a torrent one day when I get an internet plan that doesnt count uploads against my monthly quota.

Dandavats mung, yes very nice, I love the early black and white Bengali movies, they are so rich in Bengali Culture. What I really detest are these modern Hindi Films they really play India out as some western imitators.

Thanks for posting these clips. I have dial up so I cant view them unless I download them onto my hard drive and then play them on my RealPlayer. Thats what Ive done and now Ive got them in my system to watch them anytime I want.

Id like to check out that Tukaram movie as well.

Has anybody here seen Lagaan? Its a more modern Bollywood film and it doesnt really have a Vaisnava theme per se .... but I liked it.
user [343] · 2010-02-11
Hi Portnoy,

Yes I have seen that movie Lagaan, actually that is a good film, a sad scene where the British Captain forces the Raja, a vegetarian, to eat meat and when the British Captain challenges the locals to a game of cricket and then the British lose the cricket match, which had some consequences attached the game. It was good to see the Indians winning out in the end. I did like this film.

... and whats pretty amazing about Lagaan is that its based on a true story. It happened. The movie also has the popular Hollywood theme of the underdog coming from nowhere to win -- the David vs. Goliath scenario. Also its a romantic love story (the Captains sister falling for the young man of the village but realizing that she could never have him and in the end he gets together with the village girl). Even the songs and dances werent corny like in so many Bollywood movies. Yeah - Lagaan is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. Maybe Im just a sentimentalist. Hey - I cried when I saw ET.

Sentimentalist...yes me also...I always need a box of tissues when I watch Nimai of Nadia, just my false display of devotion LMHO!
