Gayatri Mantra

Hare Krishna:
I was wondering if someone could explain the meaning of the Gayatri mantra. Somewhere I read that it glorifies the Sun-god. If that is true, wasnt Srila Prabhupada unfavorable to Demigod-worship of any kind? Which brings me to another question: Is it okay to worship a Demigod if the worship is likely to help with your Sadhana?

Jiva Gosvami wrote Gayatri vyakhya vivrti but I dont have it. There are also recent books by Sacinandana Swami and Swami B. G. Narasingha (http://www.gosai.com/chaitanya/saranagati/html/gayatri_intro.html)B.R. Sridhar M.s explanation of Brahma g.m.: http://www.gosai.com/chaitanya/srila_sridhara_mj/ssm_gayatri.html

Thanks Veda for the explanation..For example: I learnt about "agnihotra" which is a personal yagya one can perform to achieve better health. During the yagya, one is supposed to recite the following mantra:
Suryay Swaha
Suryay Idam na mam
Prajapataye Swaha
Prajapataye Idam na mam
I have an illness that comes in the way of my Sadhana, so I was wondering if performing Agnihotra everyday would any way be against what Prabhupada recommended...

agnihotra-related purports: SB 10.87.25, 11.12.1-2, 11.18.8Names of devas are ultimately names of Visnu (Rig Veda Samhita 10.82.3, Vedanta sutra 1.4.28).
I dont know about efficiency of agnihotra in Kali yuga. Try ayurveda.

The Sun is seen by the Vaishnavas as an eye of Lord Vishnu:Rig Veda 1.22.20: "The princes evermore behold / that loftiest place where Visnu is / Laid as it were an eye in heaven {Sun}. (trans. Grittith)
In a similar fashion the sacrificial fire is seen as the tongue of Lord Vishnu.
A matrialist will only see Sun as a celestial object. He will also see Deity in the temple as mere stone object.
Gayatri is very sublime and has many layers of meaning.
