Knot in the heart

Bhagavatam canto 1 chapter 2 talks about "knot in the heart get pierced" (http://vedabase.net/sb/1/2/21/en) - I am not able to understand this metaphor - can some explain ?
This is always brought in reference to "material contamination we have" - but where does the heart and a knot come from ?
Is this because the "mind" does the thinking/feeling/willing and is located in the region of the heart and when there is knot we dont accept that we are servant of Krishna ?

The purport says the knot is ahankara. Although ahankara is usually translated as false ego the literal meaning is that I think I am the doer (aham: I, kara: doer). The misconception that I am the doer is held by the soul, and it is this misconception that has tied (i.e. a knot) the soul to the material conception of life (i.e I am the body, i.e. the inability to distinguish spirit from matter). The soul resides in the heart region and therefore it is reasonable to say that this knot is in the heart. As per the previous verse, this knot is loosened when one is established in mode of unalloyed goodness and has been enlivened by contact with devotional service and has gained positive scientific knowledge of the Personality of Godhead. Then your misgivings about your relation to matter are cut to pieces.
