Kartik when does it start?

Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2010-10-19 · 7 answers
Hare Krishna,

If anyone can help - on www.vaisnavacalendar.info '96 If you scroll down for 22/10/10, it states '91Fourth month of Caturmasya begins [PURNIMA SYSTEM]'92.

www.vaisnavacalendar.com also states that the fourth month of Caturmasya starts on 22/10/10, but interestingly states that the month of Damodara starts on 23/10/10.

I would of thought caturmasya and damodar month start on the same day if so which day?

Therefore it says Purnima system, i.e. from Purnima to Purnima.
Masas start on Pratipat.

Thanks prabhu

So why does caturmasya start from purnima rather than pratipat as its the begining of 4 months right?

Short answer: It starts on Pratipat.

Long answer: The Vedic calendar is determined by the New Moon day. The month
starts the day after the New Moon, the Gaura Pratipat. But it is also
acceptable and authorized to have a calendar in which the basis is the Full
Moon and the first day of the month would be the day after the Full Moon.
Since Lord Caitanya was born on a Full Moon day we Gaudiya Vaisnavas have
opted for that authorized option.

I would be grateful if you could clarify this point - the short answer states that its Pratipat and yet the long answer seems to say Purnima.

Additionally, on www.vaisnavacalendar.com it states that for London, UK, the Pratipat is this Saturday (23/10/10), however, it states that the Purnima is this Friday (22/10/10) even though the full moon image is shown for Saturday. Is this to do with the tithi variation, i.e. that even though the full moon may be on Saturday, the Purnima tithi is on the Friday?

Also, the initial question is also based on London, UK timings.

_Month_ starts on Pratipat.
_Calendar_ may be based on Amavasya or Purnima.

There are three systems for the measuring the start day of Kartika. One is ekadasi system, one is pratipat system and we in ISKCON (main temple in Mayapur and head GM) follow the purnima system, so catrumasya and kartika vratas always start at purnima. They follow pratipat system in Orissa, but that is not the mainstream or a standard. The Saradiya Rasayatra purnima is the day.

Very good questions. For caturmasya fasting, I know of three different systems being followed in ISKCON, ekadasi, purnima, and pratipat. If one if fasting according to purnima system (like most devotees in Mayapur), then the urad dal fast will begin on 22nd. If following pratipat system (like we do in Orissa) then urad dal fast will begin on 24th. I am not aware of the system followed at Vrindaban ISKCON temple. If normally the deity timing change is made on pratipat, then the change should be made this year on 24th. If normally the deep dan begins on pratipat, then this year it should begin on 24th. If either of these things were normally done from saradiya rasa purnima then this year they should start from 22nd.

This is my realization.

Hope this helps.
