How to define what is a "soul"?

Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2010-11-12 · 4 answers
Hare Krishna.

I was talking to a Christian and the question came up what a "soul" is.
At the time, I couldnt think of a concise definition that would have the structure "genus + differentia specifica" (which is what he seemed to want).

A possible one: "A soul is a living being that is constitutionally dependent on God".

What would be some other definitions?

Also, with regard to kinds of definitions, like recursive or essentialist, what would they be?

Thank you for your input.
