Baking soda should work.

Also, lemon juice.
Use a rough cotton cloth, dip it in lemon juice, rub the brass. Rinse the brass afterwards with water, dry it with a cloth.

A cleaning paste can be made of baking soda and lemon juice. Use similarly as above.

I use tilak and lemon juice. Rinse very well as lemon juice will corrode if left on.
