Came to my mind that a few years ago, some devotees that were on sankirtan and entered a big milk enterprise, here in Spain. They saw a meat spoils big truck parked right in the factory, and they asked what is that for?.
Some employees explained they were to mix the milk with that so that becomes more "tasty" and fatty.
The name of the factory here n Spain is Pascual, and I do not know if other factories folllow in the "footsteps" of this one.

Any brands that can be trusted? Or any website that tells you more about which products are not really vegetarian?
In india you have the small green dot on veg products but you never know...

The best way to find out would probably be to contact the company directly, as sometimes the ingredients on the packet are quite elusive. Another way is to contact a local vegetarian society who might provide a valuable advice re. locally available products suitable for vegetarians.A company in New Zealand recently started adding "produced on the same equipment as fish" on their dry fruit products. I was aghast to notice the change accidently, as I'd always been buying their dates, raisins etc. Moral: double-check the ingredients of familiar products from time to time... I was also shocked to find out that many baby formulas contain fish oil. Now that is one place I wouldn't suspect to find non-veg ingredients. Sometimes while shopping in the supermarket I feel cornered - the demons in Kali-yuga made sure almost every pre-cooked/processed product is contaminated with undesirable components.
