I recently read an article on the success of this practice in Holland and wonder if devotees could benefit

I know that many do, but many dont. Birth is a very complicated process and often, in this artificial age, not as forward as it used to be in earlier times. Some mothers dont feel confident enough to labour at home in case something goes wrong and it might be overlooked. I personally know two devotee women who lost their babies due to such overlooked problems while home-birthing. In any case, the decision should be left up to the mother whether she wants to deliver in the hospital or at home, unless there is a known potentially dangerous situation. Also not in every country it is easy to find a learned and experienced midwife who attends home births routinely. It is really one of those "time, place and circumstances" issue.

My wife gave birth in her bedroom. A midwife and a whole room full of devotee mums were with her. all went pretty well but still there were complications and she had to go to the hospital afterwards.

For all we like to criticize modern medicine (I criticize it a lot), statistically there are a lot less problems with births than there used to be with modern techniques. I got in a discussion at work and had to admit defeat (quietly). We all have easier lives now also, probably the woman who did it before were much hardier. Probably have to take advantage of both techniques, some natural breathing exercises or whatever to calm the mind (Anyone done hypnobirthing?) and take advantage of modern facilities.
