Yeah I bought it a few weeks ago and havent touched it. I knew it was a good name and am glad I got it. I got

krishnapedia.com
krishnapedia.net
krishnapedia.org

I will install mediawiki today on it.

I like Sitapati Prabhus idea of having a resource for beginners to get introduced or for preahcers to get simple answers. We probably have a lot of burgeoning preachers out there. Where I work I just tell one lady about Krishna Consciousness very slowly, so she likes the pictures of devotees weddings, and the colors and festivals. She saw the devotees smiling in the Polish woodstock photos and she wants to know what the music sounds like. So some my suggestion is 2 categories:

culture
questions & answers (FAQ)

I think Abhiram prabhu suggested having just questions, and I agree that should be the focus, it should be very beginner level, no philosophy, even no quoting Bhagavad Gita, just some attractive photos and some plain english

Let me put it up today and we will see if devotees are interested to contribute.

MMMmmm I saw. From what i read in the post on the other thread theres nothing on it anyway
user [2] · 2007-08-25
Imho krishnapedia.com is more of a general term, not only for preaching q&a.

Unless you want to include that on a broader KC encyclopedia, (huge project).

Actually Vanipedia should be included in Krishnapedia, as Srila Prabhupada vani is a part of KC Encyclopedia. Makes sense?

i thought the wiki here at prashnena would be used as a working space, where ideas are brought together, discussed about (either in the forum or on the wiki), and slowly put together by all interested. and the finished result to be used in other sites, like krsnapedia, or namahatta.org.

at nh-org i also want to have a section ("group," in drupal) for new devotees, with introductory material about the basics of SP, philosophy, etc. it would make more sense to develop these resources in a wiki, collaboratively, and then use the result in various ways.

i dont think its a good idea to present the finished product, the web site where you wnt everybody to go, in the form of a wiki. that limits the way how you can present it, and it leaves too many holes for spam-bots and people who dont like your site to do disturbing stuff. you can get a nicer presentation and less trouble with a non-wiki, either static or dynamic web site. IMO wiki is better for work in progress, not to present the final product.
user [75] · 2007-08-25
of course, the name "krishnapedia" strongly suggests a wiki. still, if you want to present it to the broad public, it shoulnt look like a construction site, but pretty much ordered and finished, like wikipedia does.

in the beginning, while we are working out things, there will be more likely chaos with no constant organization or presentation. even if krsnapedia is going to be a wiki, for public use, id suggest to use wiki.prashnena.com as a working place to figure out what to put in there, how to organize it, etc.
user [2] · 2007-08-25
So that is to say that Wikipedia started as a non wiki or hidden stuff and the final product will be published as a regular web?

Spam bots are not a problem, if the wiki is taken care of nicely. As you know, there is the "history" link where you can revert the content back to normal with a click.

If someone does not understand wiki concept or freedom to publish and be edited, better do their own site with stuff they can control totally.

Maybe karmis are in "ignorance" but they outsmart us in many ways, see christian outreach sites, etc.

We better become humble and learn from them on the fields we should. For Krishna.

And Wikipedia is one of them.
user [2] · 2007-08-25
In my opinion we are wasting time and going on circles about "where" to start.
It can be redirected to a domain anytime and can be copied onto any site you like.
Real problem I foresee is some people will not be able to allow their stuff being "edited".
That one could be interesting to watch. :)

www.vanipedia.org/wiki

Vanipedia is going to be an online encylopedia of Prabhupadas teachings in
compiled form. It will be a wiki. building it now and will launch it
for devotee participation on the 1st of January 2008.
user [155] · 2007-08-25
this wiki is being done by HG Visnu Murti pr (BLS) who is doing the whole exciting project.... check it out.
user [12] · 2007-08-25
Its live.

I installed a WYSIWYG because I think it is essential.

So right now it is organically evolving! Who says evolution is false?

I have disabled anonymous edits, hope that is ok with everyone.
user [12] · 2007-08-25
What should the main site be? krishnapedia.com or do it like wikipedia and redirect everything to krishnapedia.org?
user [75] · 2007-08-25
So that is to say that Wikipedia started as a non wiki or hidden stuff and the final product will be published as a regular web?
[p]no, wikipedia will never be a regular web site. but i doubt they presented all their stuff to the public from the moment they started thinking about it. wikipedia is an exceptionally well functioning example of a wiki site, and its not completely open; many articles are protected so that only established users can edited them, and they have very good control-mechanisms in place, where entries are checked against ulterior motives, etc.[/p]
Spam bots are not a problem, if the wiki is taken care of nicely. As you know, there is the "history" link where you can revert the content back to normal with a click.
[p]well, wait until pariprashnena gets a little more popular. even at namahatta.org, not a particularly popular site, hits from spam bots grew so dense at times that the server couldnt process regular requests anymore; effectively a DOS-attack - until i started blocking whole IP-ranges on the server-level. and if you dont have some automated spam-identification program in place, youll be busy all day deleting links to the cheapest viagra-outlets, etc.[/p]
user [2] · 2007-08-25
do you run your own server, phani? I have about 12 sites and never runned into that. One time a defacement and put that back in 10 mins.

[p]correct, wiki webs certainly have their use, and learning how to use them effectively is something we aught to do. but i dont think that wiki-webs are the only webs of the future, that normal, closed web sites are outdated and should be abolished in favor of wikis. even "the karmis" havent abolished normal web sites; if i want to know whats going on in the international news scene, i dont go to a web site where everybody can post anything; i go to the BBC and google, and some left-wing news services as well. i know that the info. there will be colored by the agancies respective political and economical affiliations, but i also know that most stories will be based on fact.[/p]
[p]for devotees who have been around for some time, a wiki site is a great place to accumulate and exchange information. but i wouldnt want to send a total new-comer to a site where hes likely to encounter some hotheads angry outbursts before he even has a glimpse what KC is all about. both, wiki and non-wiki web sites have their use, and not just because were in ignorance about the wiki-concept.[/p]
user [75] · 2007-08-25
do you run your own server, phani?
[p]no, were in a shared hosting environment. but for some reason weve attracted the attention of some nasty spammers. dont know what the reason is; perhaps they dont like that none of their stuff gets thorugh, or that im blocking whatever IPs are used for spam only. or just bad luck / my bad karma, who knows ...[/p]
user [75] · 2007-08-25
im getting a little confused by the apparent over-abundance of wikis at present: theres the old wiki.pariprashnena.com, then theres pariprashnena.com/pmwiki, and now, finally, krsishnapedia.com/org with a wiki.

i still think its a good idea to do the construction work on one site, and present the final product, even as a wiki, on another one.

krsnapedia would be the obvious choice for the final version for the larger public, because of the great name. but if you want to do everything in one place, we should decide which one to use. i even dont like the distinction between the two wikis at pariprashnena. if protection is required (and i think it is, for certain things), then we should move everything to the pmwiki installation, instead of having two. you can have unprotected stuff there as well.

(apart from that, i still think that tikiwiki would be a better choice, because of the additional features, like RSS import, mailikng-list integration, and others. but im not going to insist on that ...)

Krishnapedia does sound like the name of a collection of articles about a particular subject or a a group of related subjects

I wouldnt worry about that though. If the content is focussed and well defined it can have almost any name. Google is the name of a search engine. Yahoo is the name of of the biggest trafficked sites on the internet. As they say content is king. So you can conceivably call it Krishnapedia and fill it with what you like as long as it is what someone might be interested in.

If someone makes a page in the Wiki, any Wiki we could discuss types of content further.

I agree with Phani we should have a focus for development, so pick a wiki and make a Krishnapedia page and lets share some specific ideas. What are the objectives of Krishnapedia, how does it meet them, what content is required to support that.

Twiki sounds good

I dont understand the concept. A wiki is for user-generated content. How can vanipedia be both a wiki *and* an online encyclopedia of Prabhupadas teachings?

Without further explanation it sounds more like marketing speak than an actual strategy to me...

Id like to know more about the plan, beyond "I know, lets do a mash up of wikipedia and vedabase!" :-)
user [40] · 2007-08-26
Oh theres no concept yet
user [38] · 2007-08-26
Read the description at http://www.vanipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Devotee volunteers are to compile topical articles based on what SP says throughout his works. Something one needs to do himself preparing a lecture on a specific topic with the help of Vedabase.
