Why is Krishna Deities dressed nearly like a woman?
Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2007-10-21 · 14 answers
When we first saw the pictures or Deity of Krishna, its difficult to say whether its He or She! With lipstick, coloured dhotis, long hair,errings,etc....
Are there temples where the Supreme is dressed as a man? With pants, weapons etc..
Or is it due to gay pujaris?

It was explained to me that this is our attempt to show the opulence of Lord Krishna. We really cant do it but we can try as hard as possible. Plus we are trying to give the Lord the very best that is possible for us to give. I have seen deities in very simple dress on the altars of devotees that are not so able to give expensive opulent things but they are doing their very best also to please the Lord. Love and devotion...

Pants are not Vedic. Never saw Krishna murti with weapons.user [33] · 2007-10-22
[cite] VEDA:[/cite]Pants are not Vedic. Never saw Krishna murti with weapons.
Seems that Lord Krishna is always described as wearing dhotis of nice fabrics and colors particularly yellow/golden color. And as for the weapons - we worship Lord Krishna in His Vrndavan pastimes.

I dont have the exact quote so please forgive me if this is not exactly correct. But, in a letter, (If I remember correctly) Srila Prabhupada speaks about devotional paintings being "windows to the spiritual world" and that the descriptions we have of Lord Krishna, Lord Caitanya etc are ones that have been passed to us from those who were present alongside Him. Didnt Srila Prabhupada instruct how we dress the deities? This is not done by the whim of some pujari.
Not that long ago, a pujari at a temple in India (non-iskcon) dressed Lord Krishna in pants and cell-phone!

I dress deities in our temple here and we have Radha Krishna deities. I can tell you personally that Krishna has pants in a lot of his outfits. Of course, some of the look like dhotis, but even when they look like regular pants, his chadars and extra cloth take the focus of the pants. Besides, I dont see how Krishna is dressed like a girl....he has long curly hair and has earrings but a lot of present day guys have long hair and pierce their ears. I really dont see how Krishna is being dressed like a woman. In summer, Krishna does not even wear a shirt.....how is that being dressed like a woman??

> Lord Krishna in pants and cell-phone!That was in Banke Bihari mandir in Vrindavan. Why would Krishna need a cell phone? ;)

i tell you how, Krsna is reaaally reaaally opulent. is He the most opulent and he like to keep it simple. however, i remember vaikuntha the wife of ekakantha das residing at here, that she gave this gift to me like this card for her Gift shop that se is used to place on his local as a display card gifts that the people used to pass by and do take, in the backwards of the card it is written the maha-mantra and on the front picture its appears to be like for the people whom attracted came in and took one they say, ow, how nice the little ladies, some others admires as like how kute the angels are like.. is this pic where krsna and balaram appear to be gazing at each other and balaram is giving a kiss to in krsna'b4s left chick. and so they are attracted in many many so many ways,.. but the soul as it is krsna the most spiritual and renounced and liberated being as opulence there might be present in him is not woman nor man as we spirit souls might not differ from out of this conception.
i had seen, i tell you of a pic where krsna and balaram appear to be fighting an army, i dont really know which war was that actually, they both together are using weapons in the fight. i think is krsna with his big brother'b4s plow, of which balaram used to plow and rake vrndavans grass fields, etc..
it is really funny, for some devotees his ashrama may tell to them thence this, that the deities might gaze at each other depending on the circumstance, but it is a conception of the relative part of this relative world.
deities are just very opulent on the terms of being dressed out. i like when the panchatatva for example is dressed simple. like on those days on Mayapur and bengoli cultural and scholar gazes there where.
OK, more latter.
HARI BOL !!

I have to accept the point. He should look beautiful but not as a girl. Most traditional temples do just that. Its shocking for first time visitors who are not hindu.
I think it should be considered by pujaris who design outfits.

Almost all the deities in India are worshipped in the similar attire. Deities should be so presented that they are attractive and worshipable. Bhagawan Krsna is always presented in the most attractive way in all the ISKCON temples and we the bhaktas are really proud of this.Regarding weapon, Bhagawan Krsna never needed during His childhood as He had tremendous strength to destroy any asura like Kaliyadah, Putna, Kansa etc. But He certainly had Sudarshana Chakra which he used as a weapon(of course only once) during Mahabharat.

Whence thence, if this the.. from thee fourth Vedanta, the fifth Veda.. is for the entire shudra population addressed, specially, right? all we all shudras, right. so.. it is very relevant also when we speak to and recognize that this is the nivrity-marg, because the sanyass-ashrama this, the bhakti-marg presented it, this cultural outfit also, it is not from the house-hold path, and at the same time it is not rejected, this ashram.
So, the clothes of the deities can be also relevant a last when it is not. and for any-one.
Hare Krsna.

Clearly it is in the eye of the beholder. I never though Krishna was "dressed like a woman" infact I dont really know what that means. When I first saw Krishnas deity he just looked opulant. He out dresses anyone. He is THE most beautiful form.user [23] · 2007-11-27
"Why would Krishna need a cell phone? "I would attribute it to His sense of humor. One can ask why Krishna would need anything, but He can do whatever He likes.
In the matter of His sometimes feminine appearance, Ive always thought it was because everything both masculine and feminine are within Him. On further consideration, I would also say that He does not need to look tough (as opposed to an insecure man), especially when giving darshan to His devotees, and a gentle appearance is tends to look somewhat feminine. These are merely my opinions, for what theyre worth. Hare Krishna.
