Yes, this statement is true. Ive heard Bhaktivaibhava Maharaj answering such question at his lecture. When we are in such consciousness and are able to chant Maha-mantra in the proper way and attitude in our heart, we can attain liberation by chanting it just once. By this "once" is meant the last chanting before liberation ;-) But to attain level of consciousness like this we usualy need to chant much more than once... And also follow minimum 16 rounds a day and 4 regs... :-)user [12] · 2007-07-26
So we are more fallen than Ajamila?user [38] · 2007-07-26
Chanting on namabhasa level gives liberation. Suddha nama gives much more. ;)user [34] · 2007-07-26
Yes, but its not that you can do all nonsense in this life, and then at the end just say "Hare Krishna". Do you think you can trick Krishna like that? An interesting story in this regard:There was a wealthy businessman in India, but at the end of his life he decided to retire and go live in Vrindavan. So while he was there, he got sick, and his family came and took him to a hospital outside Vrindavan, and he died there. So the moral of the story is: You cant live a sinful life, and then at the end just say "Hare Krishna" once and go back to Godhead. Krishna will trick you in a way similar to the way he tricked the above mentioned businessman.

Chanting ONCE means - Pure Chantingand more chanting will gradually purify one to advance to various levels of chanting, e.g. offensive chanting, Nama abhasa, pure chanting.
B.G. 9.2 explains Patrayskasavagama (one can perceive and experience real happiness) thru the process of devotional service. So it is not like armchair phylosophy, but one has to practise to experience the results.
Queen Kuntis prayers explains who Lord Krsna personally saved them from so many calamities, similarly, all devotees who follow the process must experience, direct connection with the Supreme Lord.
Lord Caitanyas Siksastakam gives various shows the feelings of devotees at various levels of advancements when they are genuinely feeling those sentiments.

What about Ajamila? Was his chanting pure?
user [55] · 2007-07-27
Yes, he was chanting out of fear which is Ajamila somehow shouting; Oh, Nar'e4yana! once, full of anxiety.
Thath when the Visnuduttas ad the Ymadutas, held argumetns of what is Dharma and so on... Ajamila'b4s Chanting releaves him and the Visnuduttas took Him within a swan like bheemans, for which them dialogues are certainly genuin. That'b4s how Ajamila'b4s Shout out is pure, not pure becouse he was not released from his pecaminous deeds and or vikarmas, and pure becouse he was inocent of them, he showed this when he shouted his son'b4s name just out of anxiety... thus, this way, the chanting scertainly conducts the individual spiritual soul to a prefect and perfect place, for which one can realise oneself, out of heart, mind and mahy other cnsiderations for advancement.

Ajamila did not get liberation by his chanting immediately. He was reborn in Haridwar with the opportunity to purify himself. If you chant nama-aparadha you can get money, women, fame, fortune, property, etc. Many people have done this in recent history.
If you chant nama-abhasa you can get liberation (refer to the discussion between Haridasa Thakura and Gopal Chakravarti in Caitanya-caritamrita Antya-lila 3.195)
Only suddha-nama can give you suddha-bhakti.

To clarify on Ajamila. He got liberation from the reactions to his sinful activities, and thus had the opportunity to be born in Haridwar, where he was able to go from his nama-abhasa (in this case chanting the holy name in reference to some other object than the Supreme Lord), to suddha-nama, at which time he returned to the spiritual world.user [55] · 2007-07-27
