What about the prayers of Vasudeva Datta and Lord Caitanya?

Hare Krishna.

In Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Madhya Lila, Chapter 15 beginning with verse 160, Vasudeva Datta prayed for the salvation of all living entities in the universe, and Lord Caitanya replied in verse 169 saying, "Whosoever welfare you desire immediately becomes a Vaisuc0u803 nu803 ava, and Kru803 su803 nu803 a delivers all Vaisu803 nu803 avas from the reactions of their past sinful activities." Then in the beginning of verse 180, He prayed to Sri Krishna, "O my Lord, O unconquerable one, O master of all potencies, please exhibit Your internal potency to conquer the nescience of all moving and inert living entities. Due to nescience, they accept all kinds of faulty things, thus provoking a fearful situation. O Lord, please show Your glories!"

Considering these great prayers, why is almost the whole world, including myself, in such a sad state of existence?

Dear Pandu das,

great question

This must be really hard as no-one has even proffered and answer

it seems to me that all souls are not immediately provided directly for in this request, only those "Whosever welfare [Vasudeva Datta] desire[s] immediately becomes a Vaisuc0u803 nu803 ava, and Kru803 su803 nu803 a delivers all Vaisu803 nu803 avas from the reactions of their past sinful activities." (vs 15:169)

Then Caitanya carries on saying "Because of your honest desire, all living entities within the universe will be delivered, for Kru803 su803 nu803 a does not have to do anything to deliver all the living entities of the universe."

So there are two outcomes, one is that if Vasudeva Datta desired your welfare you are a Vaisnava and your sinful reactions from the past are prevented from controlling you.

second is that due to Vasudeva Dattas honest desire all entities "will be delivered" he doesnt say now or tomorrow.

The offer that all can be delivered and their sins piled on to Vasudeva Datta is not accepted by the Lord. Instead of accepting the transaction of sins for deliverance he gives something else.

Thats the way it seems when I read it.

any help anyone : )

There is a sort of continuation of this topic in Antya 3.49-92: http://vedabase.net/cc/antya/3/en

Veda are you thinking that section Pandu das refers to flls into the same situation as the below

It seems to be saying that everyone alive during the descent of Krishna or Caitanya is liberated by default

CC Antya 3.82: "My dear Lord, You have set a plan in motion by descending to the material world, but no one can understand how You are acting.

CC Antya 3.83: "Formerly, when Lord Kruc0u803 su803 nu803 a descended in Vru803 ndu257 vana, He freed all living entities in the universe from material existence in the same way.

CC Antya 3.84: "Kru803 su803 nu803 a, the unborn Supreme Personality of Godhead, master of all masters of mystic power, delivers all living entities, moving and nonmoving. Nothing is astonishing in the activities of the Lord.

CC Antya 3.85: "Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead may be seen, glorified or remembered with an attitude of envy, He nevertheless awards the most confidential liberation, which is rarely achieved by the demigods and demons. What, then, can be said of those who are already fully engaged in devotional service to the Lord?

CC Antya 3.86: "By descending as an incarnation at Navadvu299 pa, You, just like Kru803 su803 nu803 a, have already delivered all the living entities of the universe.

Ramas descent is also mentioned.

Acc to this we would be a new set of living beings.

So we are only 500 years old or less than that, very interesting

I havent heard that before

What do others think, Pandu das?

In 1968 Visnujana Swami asked Srila Prabhupada at the end of a class:

"Srila Prabhupada, you have said that Bhaktivinode Thakur could have liberated all the conditioned souls in the universe. Why didnt he do that?"

Srila Prabhupada replied: "That is his mercy. He has left something for us to do."

Just as Krishna said to Arjuna: "They are already killed by My doing - you just become my instrument."

In the same way, Srila Prabhupada - the recipient of the mercy and mission of Lord Caitanya and Vasudeva Datta - out of his mercy, has left something for us to do.

On a train in India in 1976 one disciple said to him: "Srila Prabhupada, youve given us everything."

Srila Prabhupada replied: "50% of my mission is unfinished because I have not established varnashram-dharma".

That is his mercy. The victory has already been won, now it remains only for us to become the instruments through which it is manifested.

Krishna wants everyone to be liberated: ( BG 18.66) sarva-dharmuc0u257 n parityajya mu257 m ekau109 u769 u347 aranu803 au109 u769 vraja, "Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me." So do the vaisnavavas: para-dukha-dukhi.

To make everyone liberated, Krishna leads one to Him: (Purport, BG 5.15) "However, when one desires Kru803 su803 nu803 a, the Lord takes special care and encourages one to desire in such a way that one can attain to Him and be eternally happy. The Vedic hymns therefore declare, esu803 a u hy eva su257 dhu karma ku257 rayati tau109 u769 yam ebhyo lokebhya unninu299 su803 ate. esu803 a u evu257 su257 dhu karma ku257 rayati yam adho ninu299 su803 ate: "The Lord engages the living entity in pious activities so that he may be elevated. The Lord engages him in impious activities so that he may go to hell." (Kausu803 u299 taku299 Upanisu803 ad 3.8) aj'f1o jantur anu299 u347 o yam u257 tmanahu803 sukha-duhu803 khayohu803 u299 u347 vara-prerito gacchet svargau109 u769 vu257 u347 v abhram eva ca: "The living entity is completely dependent in his distress and happiness. By the will of the Supreme he can go to heaven or hell, as a cloud is driven by the air."

But this path to perfection is a gradual process and takes a long period of pratice: (BG7.19) bahunam janmanam ante, after many births and deaths. Even then (BG 7.3) manusu803 yu257 nu803 u257 u109 u769 sahasresu803 u, only one out of many thousands actually succeeds in reaching perfection.

But perfection can happen instantaneously: (Narada Bhakti Sutra 29, purport) "Narada Muni once blessed a sadistic hunter with pure devotion to Krishna. This type of spontaneous development of bhakti is known as kripa-siddhi, perfection via the good graces of the Lord and the Vaishnavas."

But it usually doesnt happen that way and is rare: (NOD, CH 17) "Elevation to the ecstatic stage of life is generally attained through association with pure devotees, while elevation to that stage by the special mercy of Krishna or His devotee is very rare......It is just as when, sometimes, it is found that a person who never attended school or college may be recognized as a great scholar, or an honorary degree from great universities may be offered to him."
