How can one practically rear a cow in the city

Health · asked by user [] · 2007-07-27 · 9 answers
This information will be very useful. It will help one plan and ultimately rear a cow atleast in ones home. This will help with so many things and satisfy Srila Prabhupada.

If devotees can give inputs on how much space is required...practical considerations etc...it wld be wonderful

i dont think you should do that at all - unless you are able to find a few acres of pasture ground in the city. otherwise youll have to rear her in a box, more or less. this idea sounds more like cow abuse than cow protection to me.

here in mayapur (which isnt a city) i know two families who started maintaining their own cows. they find it very difficult since cows wont give milk without having calves, and very soon youll find yourself with a whole herd. (if properly looked after cows multiply faster than they die of old age.) one of the two families decided to maintain dry cows now, since they are not able to support a growing herd.

to attempt this in a city - forget it, IMO.

ys phani.

You can invent a bull powered lawnmower! All the KC grihastas can mow the lawn with a bull instead of a gaspowered lawnmower!

It would be cruel to have a cow live in a city.

In my city it is illegal to do it

I am guessing that you want to have a Cow because of the example of Lord Sri Krsna and his Acharyas preaching to us to do so.

But then you would be forgetting that They both also preached against living in the city accept to preach! What ever happened to "Vrndavan Lifestyle"?

Forget the citys! They are just for preaching in, not for living in.

Also i must comment on the other person from Mayapura, who is preaching against Cow Protection, when he said that when keeping a Cow for milk, the Cow Herd just grows to big.

That is only if you do not Protect the Cow.

A Cow can give milk for over a decade when she is properly cared for, and loved.

That statement has in the past proven to be very hard for so many to believe, in my experience. But it is true, and i have experienced it many times in my 30 plus years of Caring for Cows as directed by Srila Prabhupada. So expect many to challenge it, but what can be done?
Srimad Bhagavatam 5.5.3

Stockholm, September 9, 1973 ........................................................................................See. In a young girl, there is no milk in the breast. But as soon as the child is born, immediately there is milk. Immediately, spontaneously. This is Gods arrangement. Because the child requires food. Just see how Gods arrangement is there.
Still, we are trying for economic development. If a child is born and Gods economic program is so nice, natures economic program, that immediately the mother is ready with the milk... This is economic development. So the same milk is supplied by the cow. Shes actually mother, and this rascal civilization is killing mother. Mother-killing civilization. Just see. You suck the breast of your mother from the beginning of your life and when shes old if you think: "Mother is useless burden. Cut its throat." Is that civilization? So these rascals are doing that. Taking milk as much as possible from the cows, and then as soon as... Milk is not stopped, it will again come if the cow is protected, given right nutritious food and protection, cow will supply you milk so long she lives. As long as she lives. But as soon as they see that the cow... "Now they were giving thirty kilos. Now it has decreased, twenty kilos or ten kilos. Oh, economic development. Cut its throat."
