Basically, R. Hubbard found a sci-fi plot written by another man and turned it into a history of this planet. He allegedly said something like: If you want to become a millionaire, create your own religion. And he did that. They offer psychotests which will tell you how to remove your mental blocks by taking their expensive courses, one after another, to become a superman (operating thetan).Wikipedia has an elaborate treatment.
