How many Brahmas ?

Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2008-05-07 · 9 answers
Bhagavatam 1.3.6 Purport says :
"The creation of the material world is effected, maintained and then again
annihilated at certain intervals. So there are different names of the creations
in terms of the particular types of Brahma, the father of the living beings in
the creation. The Kum'e4ras, as above mentioned, appeared in the Kaumara
creation of the material world, and to teach us the process of Brahman
realization, they underwent a severe type of disciplinary action as bachelors."
So my question is : "How many creations have been there ? and who were the brahmas ?"

There were innumerable creations in the past (anadi) and innumerable Brahmas. Who were they? mostly jivas - most intelligent being in the Universe usually gets this position.

'93The number of manvantara-avataras for only one universe has been given. One can only imagine how many manvantara-avataras exist in the innumerable universes. And all these universes and Brahmas exist only during one exhalation of Maha-Visnu."
'93There is no limit to the exhalations of Maha-Visnu. Just see how impossible it is to speak or write of only the manvantara-avataras!" (CC 2.20.323-4)

..the size of the universe determines the number of heads Lord Brahma will have , our universe is fairlly small, so he has only 4 heads.
user [154] · 2008-05-07
Its incorrect to say that the size of the universe is determined by the number of the heads on brahma, as all universes are same or similar, this is the conclusion on the goswamis of the story of the Brahma, son of four Kumaras visiting Krshna.

On the other hand there are different brahmas within this universe, a fact that is not well known, but is discussed in the acharyas purports of the tenth canto.

Interesting.... Can you post some quotes to shed light on that? Or just present more details, please?

When Lord Hari said, '93Bring him.'94 Brahma was brought in. Brahma fell down like a stick to offer obeisances. Krsna asked him, '93Why did you come here?'94 Brahma replied, '93Lord, later I will tell why I have come, but first I wish to know why You asked, '91Which Brahma?'92 Lord, there is no Brahma other than me.
Lord Krsna smiled and meditated. The demigods from ten million universes then hurried to Dvaraka city. Among the many Brahmas some had eight heads, some sixty-four heads, some a hundred heads, some a thousand heads, some a hundred thousand heads, and some ten million heads. Among the many Sivas some had twenty heads, some fifty heads, some a hundred thousand heads and arms. Among the many Indras some had a hundred thousand eyes, and some had a million eyes. Many other demigods, with many kinds of forms and ornaments, also came. Then they all approached Lord Krsna and bowed down before His lotus feet. When the four-headed Brahma saw all this he became mad with wonder.

In Visnu-dharma Purana, Uttara-khanda, it is said that all the material universes have the same structure and the same kind of residents:
'93O king, all material universes have the same form. They have the same regions and the same kinds of living entities.'94

Rupa confirms here that resolution of the apparent contradiction is given here (in this verse) of Uttara Khanda.

thats from Laghu Bhagavatamrta - Rupa Goswami

the other occurs in VCT commentary of the tenth canto - was discussed in VIHE course this winter, where VCT states that it should have been another Brahma, as the original is busy with other activities.

I only have one head, my universe is very small
user [439] · 2009-09-06
There are billions and billions of Brahmas. One for each universe.
