Painting metal deities

What are the best kind of paints to use to paint metal deities?? Ive heard enamel paints....but is there any other kind of paint that devotees generally use to paint them? What is the best kind? I would be eternally grateful if somebody can pleaaaaaaaaase shed some light on this matter.
