Diksa>Harinam?

I have been taught Harinam is just a small stepping stone on the way to pure bhakti, and that diksa is essential for spiritual growth under guru.
Without diksa I am told it is impossible to ever have pure prema.
How soon after Harinam should one take diksa? (I have been told 6 months is average)
I was also told by my Godbrothers and Sisters that alot of them did not feel they were ready to take diksa, but took it because they felt it was so important, and like harinam everything fell into place after they took it. (meaning it opened them up to better sadhana etc.)
