quota?
Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2008-06-11 · 4 answers
Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the Lord. One should therefore accept only those things necessary for himself, which are set aside as his quota, and one should not accept other things, knowing well to whom they belong.

Translation:He who is satisfied with gain which comes of its own accord, who is free from duality and does not envy, who is steady in both success and failure, is never entangled, although performing actions. - BG 4.22
Purport:
A Kruc0u803 su803 nu803 a conscious person does not make much endeavor even to maintain his body. He is satisfied with gains which are obtained of their own accord. He neither begs nor borrows, but he labors honestly as far as is in his power, and is satisfied with whatever is obtained by his own honest labor. He is therefore independent in his livelihood. He does not allow anyones service to hamper his own service in Kru803 su803 nu803 a consciousness. However, for the service of the Lord he can participate in any kind of action without being disturbed by the duality of the material world. The duality of the material world is felt in terms of heat and cold, or misery and happiness. A Kru803 su803 nu803 a conscious person is above duality because he does not hesitate to act in any way for the satisfaction of Kru803 su803 nu803 a. Therefore he is steady both in success and in failure. These signs are visible when one is fully in transcendental knowledge.

Your quota is what you truly need to survive and function in this world. If you are fat, you obviously eat more than your quota, if you have a big closet full of clothes you have not used in years, you have more than your quota of clothes, etc. How to balance it? Share with those who are lacking in what you have in excess.
This is a very important principle of life. I am glad you brought it up. When we only use our quota we feel light and free.

I do an exercise every few months. I go through absolutely all my things, including eyeglasses, cloth etc. I discard or gift all that superfluous or not really useful for me. No "ifs" allowed. No exceptions. You sleep better after that.

I do something similar. I go through everything and if I havent used it in the last 6 months, I get give it away. Otherwise it feels like a burden. Though sometimes I regret it when I start looking for something then realize I threw it out. Other times I think I am just being falsely renounced. But on the whole it is a good system. Life becomes light and simple.
