Austerity is the currency of the universe. Their austerities can bring about favorable benedictions for the masses. That is what is meant by "The wealth of the Brahmanas".user [160] · 2008-07-27
Towards the end of Srila Prabhupadas Krsna Book, in a chapter called " The Superexcellent Power of Krishna " there is a nice story about Brghu muni. It does not answer this question directly but explains why brahmanas are generally materially poor.
