Austerity is the currency of the universe. Their austerities can bring about favorable benedictions for the masses. That is what is meant by "The wealth of the Brahmanas".

Towards the end of Srila Prabhupadas Krsna Book, in a chapter called " The Superexcellent Power of Krishna " there is a nice story about Brghu muni. It does not answer this question directly but explains why brahmanas are generally materially poor.
