He was wearing a contemporary to his time dress that suited the royal order. It resembled a turban, but only because it had elements of a valuable cloth in it. It also had decorations of the valuable stones incorporated in it that forming something that resembles crown, but not the crown of a western king; it is differently shaped (eg less spiky) and is connected to the hairstyle/treatment of the long hair. Note that his hairstyle(s) and headgear in Vrindavana are completely different (and less formal). BBT painting you possibly refer uses what is called artistic licence that is certainly required when dealing with Krishnas images. Under it sometimes elements of the Vrindavna style dresses are projected into Dwaraka pastimes, which is our mood and is not contradicting the ultimate reality or vision of the acaryas.
