What constitutes a stalwart devotee?
Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2008-12-24 · 24 answers
Of course we are all trying to follow the principle of engaging FAVOURABLE aspects of the material in the Lords service but how far does this go? I know of many senior devotees who watched The Matrix for example....does it mean we can watch movies, play video games, listen to materialistic music and consider ourselves stalwart? It would be interesting to know what the opinions of the assembled devotees is about Stalwart and what that actually means.

As usual there are two completely different scales of measurement. One is religious - according to adhikari varna and asrama, and the formalities of diksa.
One is spiritual - according to personal qualities.
The truth of the matter is that these two measurements correlate very loosely.
The religiously stalwart would definitely want to avoid any appearance of being associated with the less advanced.
The spiritually stalwart are more concerned with matters of truth and saintly principles than appearance (like posting on this site).

He always remembers Krishna, and never forgets Him.I recall reading, I think it was in Sruta Kirti Prabhus _What is the Difficulty?_, that once Srila Prabhupada watched a Charlie Chaplin movie while on a plane. When asked about it, Srila Prabhupada remarked that Chaplin was very funny, and it reminded him of Krishnas wonderful sense of humor.

If your Playing Pacman thinking what a cool game Krishna created, then its cool.user [313] · 2008-12-24
Yes, he always remembers Krsna, never forgets him.Like certain guru, while playing football, every time he would score a goal, he would say Haribooool instead of Goooooal...! Thats real stalwart devotee, doing everything for Krsna, always remembering Krsna!

Absolutely agree with you there....anyone can make a show of devotion (and at the same time engage in mundane activites). I can relate a personal story myself. When I was playing drums in the Hare Krsna band, I was instructed by a Sannyasi to listen to mundane music so I could enhance my service (and when I played guitar the same instruction was given). Ive got to say that even though it enhanced my service somewhat, I started to become attracted to it and had to stop to preserve my own spiritual life. I guess its a matter of how spiritually advanced we are (which I am not) and if we are able to consciously expose ourselves to this without becoming attracted to it. I guess its a matter of being realistic and honest with yourself....will I become contaminated subtely by this activity (like Pacman addicts) or am I able to engage this and remain detached from gross or subtle sense gratification.

By my reading of the dictionary definition given by Misra prabhu a "stalwart devotee" is one who remains steadfast in their contribution across time.user [166] · 2008-12-24
"The material sins are products of our desires to lord it over material nature. It is very difficult to get rid of such desires. Women and wealth are very difficult problems for the devotee making progress on the path back to Godhead. Many stalwarts in the devotional line fell victim to these allurements and thus retreated from the path of liberation. But when one is helped by the Lord Himself, the whole process becomes as easy as anything by the divine grace of the Lord."uc0u346 ru299 mad Bhu257 gavatam 1.2.17 Purport
So even stalwart devotees may fall....lust arising from the mode of passion?
user [166] · 2008-12-24
Dictionary definitions aside...Srila Prabhupada mentions stalwart devotees...for example Sukadeva Goswami:"Consequently Lord Kuc0u7771 u7779 u7751 a gave the King a further chance for development in devotional service by introducing him to u346 ukadeva Gosvu257 mu299 , a stalwart devotee of the Lord with perfect knowledge in self-realization." u346 ru299 mad Bhu257 gavatam 2.4.1 Purport
Any definitions/ideas in relation to SPs books?

In letters, this is the only time, that Srila Prabhupada used word stalwart in relation to his disciples. So many big stalwart devotees are leaving......
---------
So far Dayananda, I have no objection if the grhasthas live outside and earn money, but I do not want them to leave. The strict temple procedure is only for those who live in the temple. Grhasthas should live outside, and they cannot follow strictly everything, but why they should give up altogether their devotional procedures? So many big stalwart devotees are leaving, why is this? Advaita, Uddhava, Krsna das, and now our Dayananda and Nandarani. I have sent them each one letter, so if you find them, you may deliver them my letters. This is not at all good if our big devotees fall down so easily and go away. Try to save them.

.....we want big stalwart men to preach this Kuc0u7771 u7779 u7751 a consciousness movement.------------
So when he preaches all over the world, that is called parivru257 jaku257 cu257 rya. And when hes experienced, he executes the work by his assistants. That is called paramahau7745 sa. So gu7771 hasthas are supposed to be paramahau7745 sa. Just like Bhaktivinoda u7788 hu257 kura, he was gu7771 hastha, magistrate, government servant, but he has worked so much for Lord Caitanya Mahu257 prabhu in writing books. Not only writing books, but also begetting a child like Bhaktisiddhu257 nta Sarasvatu299 Gosvu257 mu299 Mahu257 ru257 ja, my spiritual master. So that is gu7771 hastha. They should produce children like Bhaktisiddhu257 nta Sarasvatu299 Gosvu257 mu299 Mahu257 ru257 ja. Because we want big stalwart men to preach this Ku7771 u7779 u7751 a consciousness movement.

so I infer that Srila Prabhupada talks about prominent devotees in the sense of well-known and famous in the society at large for their devotion.user [313] · 2008-12-25
To me it seems more, that he uses word stalwart for prominent personalities (and even animals) well-known and famous for their strength and achievements. For someone big, influential, out-standing, high-achieving, impressive....===========

SB 3.9.1 Purport excerpt:The most stalwart scientists and philosophers, therefore, cannot be accepted as wonderful. They only appear wonderful because they are instruments in the hands of the illusory energy of the Lord. Under illusion, the general mass of people deny the existence of the Supreme Lord and accept the foolish products of illusory energy as supreme.
