Another angle on this....Fanatic normally indicates someone who has little spiritual realisation but is protecting himself from his own material desires by fanatically following rules and regulations...the other side is someone who finds fault in this fanaticism due to their own desire/justification for not strictly following spiritual principles, such as listening to mundane music or eating eating food cooked by materialists etc.

I think its a matter of maturity....if we are experiencing the purifying effects and getting a spiritual taste by seriously following Krsna consciousness, we naturally avoid mundane activities because there is no spiritual taste there. Srila Prabhupada himself was not a fanatic, but he strictly avoided food cooked by materialists (when it was offered to him, he requested uncut fruit instead). Heres an interesting quote to illustrate the natural avoidance of mundane activities and sense gratification because we experience bliss in Krsna consciousness:

"Everyone of you should be thoroughly convinced of the power of the Hare Krsna mantra to protect you in all circumstances and chant accordingly at all times without offense. Then advancement will be swift and you will gradually come to see everything clearly so that you may act for the pleasure of the Lord without uncertainty. When one is spontaneously engaged in this way, always in the service of the Lord and anxious to avoid all mundane activities, he is actually experiencing the taste of bliss in Krsna consciousness."
From a letter to Damodara - January 10, 1971

I feel there is a fine line between mature, strict and serious following of the principles as given to us through Srila Prabhupadas instructions (for instance not watching mundane movies, avoid eating in non-devotee restaurants or not listening to mundane music) and a fanatic who follows everything to an extreme degree without any actual mature spiritual realisation....lets not get the two mixed up.

P.S. I dont put myself in this category of seriously following spiritual princples with maturity, but I know of devotees who are in this category and have been accused of fanatacism
