Jobs in bad economic times

Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2009-03-12 · 10 answers
Things are getting tough all over. There are jobs that as devotees we should not even remotely consider ie butcher - (no way!!!).

However, if push comes to shove and it is a question of shelter and feeding the family, can a devotee consider some jobs that otherwise we would not take. ie - casinos etc?

Wal-Mart is always hiring. Its not a high paying job, so if youre a family man....

I have not lost my job yet although there are cutbacks and layoffs going on at the company I work for. this was a general question.

What do you mean "we" white man?

This is a question about your personal principles. Are you hardcore - "Krishnas mercy or death!", or "we have to do the necessary, prabhu".

An Interesting example which confronted me several years ago,i was surprised to see my godbrother working under the employment of the city council. He had taken a job as a street cleaner. We embraced openly and went our separate ways. However it dawned on me that he was now working as a sudra, even though he was trained as a brahmana........cleaning toilets ect....receiving money but having to take the resultant karma and degradation which his employment sadly conferred on this great soul.He also had lost that dynamic enthusiasm which had been his every breath. As a farther as he was,i felt extremely blessed that i had intentionally always preached and had refused to be degraded by the unsuitable employment sometimes offered by krishna through maya.Even now i have created my own business enviroment to allow my family to experience devotional service even amongst the karmis.Where we listen to the chanting most of the day.

Yes. A devotee dedicated to Krishna; one who loves Him, can do anything to sustain his family. By anything, I mean anything within the limits of propriety.

If meat-selling is the only way; or if working at a casino is the only way; a pure devotee will come to no harm working thus.

Krishna only sees ones bhava, ones deep attachment for Him; not ones occupational duties.

Be practical, work anywhere, and always think of Krishna. I will tell you a story since we are discussing illicit sex and intoxication etc.

STORY:

There was once a sage who lived opposite a prostitute.

Every evening, when she was entertaining customers, the sage was thinking: What a lousy life she leads, whereas I am so pure and pious...
Every evening, when she saw the sage, she was thinking: What a holy life he leads; whereas I am so impure...

They both died on the same day.

The sages soul was being taken to hell; and he saw that the prostitutes soul was moving towards heaven.

The sage screamed: Hey, there seems to be mistake, I am a saint...

The Yamadutas said: No, there is no mistake. You kept thinking how unholy the prostitute was, and your mind dwelled on her; whereas she kept thinking how holy you were; and her mind dwelled on your piety. We dont take external activities into consideration. It is the state of your mind we are interested in...

The sage said: But this is unjust, my body was so pure...

The Yamadutas said: So it was. See, your body is being burnt on a sandalwood pyre; whereas her body is being fed to the vultures. We are never unjust.

END OF STORY.

Get it? What and about whom your mind thinks is more important than what your body does...
