Why did they bury Srila Puri Maharaja?

Also, I hear that they also buried Srila Prabhupada as well. I thought we cremate the body after the soul leaves.
Does this have something to do with being a guru?

[p]Some gurus are cremated (gaura kisora dasa babaji, bhaktivinoda thakura etc.,). Some are buried in a ceremony called samadhi vidhi with mantras written on the chest and salt filling it the sides of the grave[sup](Salt, vibhooti (ash), camphor, flower petals)[/sup][/p]user [149] · 2009-03-23
Haribol ccd, Gaura-Kishora dasa babaji was cremated? Where did you get that information? I understood that he was buried. I have a photo of the ceremony when his samadhi was moved and the photo shows his bones.user [154] · 2009-03-23

(Most of the time that I know of cremation in bengal india some bones remain, unless you have lots of money for lots of wood). The point is that ashes/remains are buried.user [19] · 2009-03-23
They are buried because they are saintly and that is the procedure for saintly people. To say "buried" sounds kind of bad. They are put in samadhi is more adequate I think.user [366] · 2009-03-23
Well this is new to me. I always thought that the body is cremated and the ashes thrown in the Ganga river.user [154] · 2009-03-23
[p]Actually samadhi vidhi ceremony with salt is very old. it is older then the split between hindus and jains. Jains have a similar one for the saints of their tradition. [p][p]Ashes (often just lightly burned bodies) of a common man will be disposed in the ganges.
