Go to the ancestors?

Philosophy · asked by user [] · 2009-08-17 · 2 answers
In Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Ch 9 Verse 25, the Lord says "Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; those who worship ancestors go to the ancestors; and those who worship Me will live with Me."

Wanting to live with ancestors means with the same people we live with in this life and ancestors of our current family, right? If we all change our bodies at the time of death and get new bodies with new family members, what would a planet of ancestors be like? How would people in the same family but with very different karmas all take birth in bodies fitting the ancestors criteria? Would they be recognizable to the person desirous of living with the ancestors? Or is it something else altogether? Thank you.

My understanding is that this applies to pre-Kali yuga Vedic society where every grhastha does a daily pitri yajna (one of panca mahayajna) and yearly sraddha. In this way one continues to be born in the same family even after ones return from pitriloka on earth. Thats why so much importance is given to family ancestors on this material dharma level.

Similarly, one can attain the Pita planets by performing a specific yajna."
