How to make line breaks when replying to a text with a quote?

Greetings.
How to make line breaks when replying to a text with a quote?
If I reply to a post by quoting it directly, the reply all comes out in one portion, regardless of having spaced it with Return/Enter.
If I then edit it by switching to the "text" format as opposed to "BBCode", the line breaks appear, but the so do the tags for quoting.
Is there a way around that, so that one can make the quoted text appear in the quoted text box, but with normal line breaks in ones own posted text?
Thanks.
